Resume article

The Resumé as Genre: A Rhetorical Foundation for First-year Composition was a somewhat interesting article. Interesting because it was from a different perspective and brought up some good points.

“Like other genres, resumés are a means of social action…any genre is itself the place where writers balance two sets of needs at least: on the one hand, the needs of a writer to express an intent; on the other, the needs of one or more audiences. “

I find the quote above useful. I like how they say resumés are a means of social action. It’s so true and something you don’t necessarily thing about when it comes to writing them. And balance really is one of the keys to a successful resumé.

It also goes on to talk about how you can tailor your resumés to the job your applying for. This I thought was great advice. Being selective in what you have on your resumé is super important. What one company should or want to see is different from another company. Knowing that we can pick and choose what we want to actually put on our resumés and make sure only the relevant stuff gets put on.

I also thought the following was interesting:

“Teaching the resumé as a genre allowed students to revisit concepts they believed they already knew; this theme appeared in several student reflections. Several students, for instance, remarked that they found their earlier conception of genre too limited.”

I think a lot of the time as students we learn something as a certain way and then down the road it changes. For example, in high school English we always had to have a ridiculous amount of pages for our papers. I remember asking/telling my teacher, “I can’t write any more there’s nothing left to say. Why must it be this long?” He reiterated the page requirement and had me read a classmates paper to see what a proper story looked like. All I saw was a long paper filled with “BS”.

Then when I got to college I felt like all the page requirements flew out the window. In News Writing it was no longer about it length; it was about content. In fact, professors preferred articles that were clear and concise. And many of my other classes followed suite. My new understanding is to get to the point with your writing and then be done. There’s no need to “BS”.

So we constantly learn new things and our understanding of things change. I think that is definitely true when it came to this assignment.
